Project Office Showcases Regional Climate Initiatives at UN Climate Conference in Bonn

s part of the 62nd session of the Subsidiary Bodies (SB62) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), held in Bonn from 16 to 26 June 2025, the Project Office for Central Asia on Climate Change and Green Energy is organizing a high-level side event focused on strengthening regional climate action and preparing for the upcoming 2026 Regional Environmental Summit (RES) in Astana.
UNFCCC SB62 serves as a critical intersessional meeting ahead of the annual Conference of the Parties (COP), where participating countries discuss technical and scientific aspects of implementing the Paris Agreement, including adaptation, emissions reduction, climate finance, and other pressing issues. The session provides a platform for knowledge exchange, enhanced cooperation, and shaping the global climate agenda.
The Role of the Project Office at UNFCCC SB62
The RES 2026 Project Office is actively engaged in SB62, leveraging it as a strategic platform to advance Central Asia’s regional climate agenda. Its presence in Bonn underscores the commitment of Central Asian nations to jointly address escalating environmental challenges.

On 20 June 2025, the Project Office will host the Fifth Preparatory Consultation for the 2026 Regional Environmental Summit, titled:
“Accelerating Regional Climate Action: Toward the 2026 Regional Environmental Summit.”
The event will take place in Bonn, Germany.
This consultation marks the fifth in a series of regional meetings designed to ensure structured and coordinated preparations for the Summit. The previous four consultations were successfully held alongside other major international events, maintaining momentum and fostering continuous dialogue and joint decision-making.
This side event represents a key milestone in a regional cooperation initiative launched by Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, in partnership with the United Nations. The process aims to develop joint approaches and concrete mechanisms for tackling climate change across Central Asia, culminating in the 2026 RES in Astana.
Discussion Topics Include:
- The strategic importance of RES 2026 as a regional platform for aligning Central Asian countries’ climate strategies.
- Strengthening climate diplomacy and advancing transformative sustainable development projects in the region.
- Harmonizing regional efforts with global climate processes.

- Representatives from government agencies, including Ministries of Ecology, Economy, and Finance of Central Asian countries (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan), as well as Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Delegates from international organizations, including UNFCCC, OECD, World Bank, and EBRD.
- A welcome address will be delivered by Mr. O. Oshurbaev, Vice Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan.
