Central Asian countries to strengthen cooperation on early warning of climate risks

RSE “Kazhydromet” will hold a panel session titled “Early Warning Systems in Central Asia: From Regional Cooperation to a Sustainable Future” within the framework of the Regional Ecological Summit 2026 (hereinafter – RES), which will take place in Astana on 22–24 April. The event will serve as a key platform for national hydrometeorological services to develop joint solutions to reduce climate risks and strengthen regional cooperation.

The session will be attended by Celeste Saulo, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization; Kamal Kishore, Head of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction; as well as heads of national hydrometeorological services of Central Asian countries: Danara Alimbayeva (Kazakhstan), Daniyar Tologonov (Kyrgyzstan), Abdullo Kurbonzoda (Tajikistan), Arslan Seyitmuhammedov (Turkmenistan), Sherzod Khabibullaev (Uzbekistan), and GIZ Project Manager Sergey Makarov.

Central Asia is among the regions most vulnerable to climate change. The increasing frequency of droughts, floods, and extreme weather events is already having a significant impact on economies, ecosystems, and public safety. In this context, the development of effective early warning systems for hydrometeorological and climate risks is of particular importance. This issue will be central to the session.

The agenda will also include: the implementation of the global initiative Early Warnings for All (EW4All) in Central Asian countries; strengthening cooperation among national hydrometeorological services in the region; exchange of data, technologies, and best practices; and the introduction of modern forecasting tools and public alert systems.

Particular attention will be given to the role of national hydrometeorological services, which ensure monitoring, forecasting, and timely warning of natural hazards.

Following the discussion, it is planned to adopt a joint statement of the national hydrometeorological services of Central Asian countries on the implementation of the Early Warnings for All initiative, including specific recommendations. The document will outline practical measures for establishing a sustainable regional early warning system and will serve as a basis for further integration into national strategies of the countries in the region.
