The role of science in shaping climate solutions in Central Asia to be discussed at RES 2026

The Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Kazakhstan will hold a session within the framework of the Regional Ecological Summit 2026 (hereinafter – RES), which will take place in Astana on 22–24 April, to discuss the role of science, innovation, and advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, in ensuring sustainable development and climate resilience in Central Asia.
The thematic session entitled “The Role of the Academic and Scientific Community in Shaping Regional Climate Solutions” will be held on 24 April. The event will bring together representatives of government agencies, leading international organizations, including COMSTECH and ISTC, scientific centers and universities from Kazakhstan and Central Asia, as well as European research institutes.
Central Asia is among the regions most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, particularly in terms of water security, glacier retreat, ecosystem degradation, and the growing scale of climate risks. These challenges are long-term and transboundary in nature and require responses based on scientific evidence, interdisciplinary research, and strategic foresight.
In this context, academic and research institutions play a critically important role not only as generators of knowledge, but also as strategic partners for governments, international organizations, and development institutions.
Against the backdrop of intensifying global climate challenges, growing technological competition, and the transition to a green and digital economy, science is acquiring new significance — as a driver of systemic transformations, a forecasting tool, and a foundation for strategic decision-making.
Particular attention during the session will be paid to:
●       the use of artificial intelligence and big data in climate modeling and natural resource management;
●       the development of climate and environmental technologies (climate tech, clean tech);
●       the creation of regional innovation ecosystems and scientific platforms;
●       the integration of science, business, and government to accelerate the implementation of solutions;
●       the development of human capital and the training of a new generation of specialists.
A separate focus area will be the discussion of the role of the scientific community in shaping long-term development scenarios and enhancing regional resilience to climate risks, including issues of water security, ecosystem degradation, and transboundary resource management.
It is expected that the session will serve as a starting point for the development of new formats of scientific cooperation, the advancement of innovative projects, and the launch of initiatives aimed at creating a Regional Climate Hub for Central Asia focused on integrating science, technology, and policy.
